Today is Thursday, September 2, 2021.  Our cohort is currently working on re-organizing the room however we please, so we got the opportunity to change different classroom features that we find uncomfortable, or that we think are kind of a hindrance to our learning.  Together we decided that since our room is already divided by the large pushable door that it would be easier to use each separately.  'The Cooler' would be used as the place where we could some writing since it had chairs and tables which could be used when the journalism and stories classes take place here later this month, meanwhile the 'Screening Room' would be more for discussions since any changes we could make were limited due to the elevation of the stadium seating. Later we decided that we could also use a whiteboard since we learned that our monitor setup was to be used elsewhere, additionally, we found that we could take back the old projector that was taken down in preparation for the move to the 9 West building.  Another thing we did was have a discussion about what should be on our social contract which is essentially a document that states what good students and teachers should look like and what we should standards we should meet to be good students and teachers.  For example, we decided that students should work in a timely fashion, and teachers should be willing to accept feedback.

Drippy Stats

This week at my unorthodox, project based high school, GCE lab school, we have finished up with our first Action project of the year for our water class. An action project is a project we complete that can be used to broadcast and show our learning in a unit, this unit we learned about conversions, fractions, and part vs. Percent. These topics were then applied to the real world when we learned about how many around the world do not have easy access to clean water and how this means that many around the world must walk long distances every day to bring home surface water to sustain themselves and their families.  This units action project echo's what we've learned and has provided us an opportunity to teach others about this ongoing tragedy.     to get some perspective on water usage we used a website to calculate approximately how much water we use on a daily basis, I learned that I use about 161 gallons of water daily which I found out is MORE ...

Papaya Pete

Papaya Pete Welcome to our first unit of Food For thought! A class where we talk about the Anthropological and historical ideas that food takes us including where it came from and how that in turn informs us about ourselves. Did you know that corn has domesticated us? It turns out that what was once a grain has evolved and grown along side us to be more useful to us, because it turns out that being useful to humans has become the greatest evolutionary advantage ever! To add insult to injury corn is in just about any food you could think of now. Don't believe me? check the ingredients on the back of your Cheetos. Its in just one form or another.  During this class we traced back our roots as far as we could go to see what the different foods could teach us about where and who we came from.  We put all this info together in a colorful family tree. We also put together a map with the center of origin for almost every food crop with trade routes and the ancient civilizations that ...

Puerto Rico Travel Brochure

This unit in our Spanish 2 course we learned a great deal.  We learned about new conjugations and how to apply them in conversation.  These new conjugations include -ar -er -ir verbs as well as ser and estar.  Learning these expanded our potential for sentence complexity, and allowed us to try more new and fun sentences.  We also learned about comparatives and superlatives to further describe something.  Finally this action project was to create a fake travel brochure for the country of our choice.  We had to apply what we had learned into it, and creatively present it. Afterword:  This action project was honestly not my favorite.  While it was interesting to apply what I had learned and to refresh my brain on the subjects; there was not much flexibility in how to apply my own creative flair.  Otherwise something else worth mentioning is the difficulty I felt with applying all the conjugations I learned in sentences in the slideshow.  ...
