Keeping our Vision on Fission!

This unit we've been hard at work learning about functions, system of equations, and renewable energy.  We learned all about all the different types of energies and how they work and are used in the real world.  We spoke with Christa Markgraff who works in the natural gas industry to hear from someone with in-depth experience with all kinds of energy. Even though her work is in natural gas she explained all the different pros and cons of each energy type.  Did you know thorium used in nuclear power plants is one of the most efficient power sources?  I didn't It was really cool to talk to and ask questions to someone with proper experience in the field.  To wrap it all up we worked on creating an infomercial for a renewable resource of our choice.  It was fun because we got to take lots of creative liberty on this one. We even took lots of inspiration from the flex tape infomercials featuring the legendary Bob Saget. Now without further ado here's my infomercial!

After completing this Action Project there's a lot to unpack like I said we got to get really creative with this project and it turned out to be one of the most fun Action projects yet. I messed around with editing, sound effects, lighting and more. During this project I learned that Illinois is actually using nuclear to reduce the amount of fossil fuels were using and I thought that was really interesting since it wasn't really publicized.  Thank you so much for watching and I hope you enjoyed

Drippy Stats

This week at my unorthodox, project based high school, GCE lab school, we have finished up with our first Action project of the year for our water class. An action project is a project we complete that can be used to broadcast and show our learning in a unit, this unit we learned about conversions, fractions, and part vs. Percent. These topics were then applied to the real world when we learned about how many around the world do not have easy access to clean water and how this means that many around the world must walk long distances every day to bring home surface water to sustain themselves and their families.  This units action project echo's what we've learned and has provided us an opportunity to teach others about this ongoing tragedy.     to get some perspective on water usage we used a website to calculate approximately how much water we use on a daily basis, I learned that I use about 161 gallons of water daily which I found out is MORE ...

Puerto Rico Travel Brochure

This unit in our Spanish 2 course we learned a great deal.  We learned about new conjugations and how to apply them in conversation.  These new conjugations include -ar -er -ir verbs as well as ser and estar.  Learning these expanded our potential for sentence complexity, and allowed us to try more new and fun sentences.  We also learned about comparatives and superlatives to further describe something.  Finally this action project was to create a fake travel brochure for the country of our choice.  We had to apply what we had learned into it, and creatively present it. Afterword:  This action project was honestly not my favorite.  While it was interesting to apply what I had learned and to refresh my brain on the subjects; there was not much flexibility in how to apply my own creative flair.  Otherwise something else worth mentioning is the difficulty I felt with applying all the conjugations I learned in sentences in the slideshow.  ...

Papaya Pete

Papaya Pete Welcome to our first unit of Food For thought! A class where we talk about the Anthropological and historical ideas that food takes us including where it came from and how that in turn informs us about ourselves. Did you know that corn has domesticated us? It turns out that what was once a grain has evolved and grown along side us to be more useful to us, because it turns out that being useful to humans has become the greatest evolutionary advantage ever! To add insult to injury corn is in just about any food you could think of now. Don't believe me? check the ingredients on the back of your Cheetos. Its in just one form or another.  During this class we traced back our roots as far as we could go to see what the different foods could teach us about where and who we came from.  We put all this info together in a colorful family tree. We also put together a map with the center of origin for almost every food crop with trade routes and the ancient civilizations that ...
