Una Casa Pequeña

The last few weeks this Winter we have progressed a lot in our 'Spanish I' course here at GCE. We have learned things like how to describe spatial relation like aqui : here, ahi : there, and alli : there (farthest).  we also learned all the various names for the rooms of a house as well as what chores can be done there.  The last thing we learned was the different conjugations for -er, -ar, and -ir verbs. The goal for this units action project was to put all that we learned together.  To achieve this we created a labeled floor plan for our very own house design in google drawings with a living room, a bedroom, a dining room, and a bathroom.  Once we did that we focused on practicing our verb endings and spatial relation by writing about all the different chores you can do in each room with the correct conjugations on them and using estar in a sentence to reflect on location.  Here is are the floor plans for my house! The Hydrocarbon Held Hostage

These last few weeks we've been hard at work in the first unit of our 'Fuel' class.  This unit was on slopes, lines, and atoms. We learned about the parts of an atom and how draw a diagram of a covalent bond for the science portion, and how to graph lines using the formulas y=mx+b and Y-Yo=M(X-Xo).  Most importantly we learned about different hydrocarbons and how they are formed, used, and what their drawback are.   Unfortunately because of Covid we were unable to do an FE (Field Experience) to experience the real world implications of this topic, but all the same we were able to practically put what we learned to the test with this units action project a presentation on a real world current event related to our hydrocarbon of choice.  We researched our hydrocarbon and the country the current event is from to pull together what you will find to be an intriguing and comprehensive guide to both a fossil fuel and a real life implement of ...

Operating in a World of Opportunity

Hello everybody! I am ER and I am very pleased to welcome you as we come to the end of or very first unit in our humanities class 'Who Am I'. A class where we study the intricacies of philosophy and the historical figures who taught us to tap into our faculty of wonder. In this class we are introduced to philosophers from both the pre-socratic and socratic eras of philosophy, and how they thought about the very nature of reality. To learn about these great figures we read the book 'Sophies World' by Jostein Gaarder. In 'Sophies world' we are introduced in depth to philosophical questions and the history behind those who proposed them such as Democritus who the idea of the atom originated from, and Socrates who gave birth to thought. We followed protagonist Sophie through her adventure into how we know what we know, and what our place in the world is. Besides this book we took a dive into psychology as we considered the ideas presented by Sigmund Freud and Ca...

Analyzing 'The One'

This term for the civic term we took a class called Ollywood where we learned all about the ins and outs of movie-making. We learned about everything that happens in pre-production, production, and post-production.  We met with experts in different fields like foley art, Film professors and even directing for our Field experience. My favorite of which was watching the new movie "Caged Birds" at the Siskel Film Center and getting to do a virtual Q&A with the director of the movie. This experience was so interesting to me because I got to ask questions about inspiration and creative choices from the director himself! How often does a person get to do that?  We learned about movie analysis and different ways to critique a movie using the correct terms.  For our Final Presentation or FP, we took what we learned to analyze a movie of our choice. I worked with Damian and we did 'The Matrix'.  After watching we chose to do a generic analysis o...

Kinda Sketchy

This quarter I took a workshop class called 'Podcasting 101'. In Podcasting 101 we learn to produce, record and edit our own podcasts. With my friend Z we created a podcast called 'Kinda Sketchy'its a podcast where we interview strangers with fun questions about their lives and all their interesting experiences. Below you can find the first two episodes of our podcast.  Overall I am happy with our interview but if I could have changed anything in our podcast I would add some better questions and also I would try and find quieter backgrounds for the interview. Please enjoy our Podcast, "Kinda Sketchy".                                                                                                           GCE ...

Air Quality in the "City of Lights"

This week in our 'Water' core class we had our final action project of the quarter, so we had a mini-unit. We have been learning about line slope and greenhouse gases. During class, we did lots of work putting the line slope formula to use with "real number" with meaning. We took statistics on things like the world's concentration of CO2 by year.  To put this together we were tasked with making an action project where we took a city of our choice and use what we have learned on line slope to make our own graphs of different statistics relating to air quality and climate.   Here is Google Slides presentation on my city, Paris, which I chose because mainly because it is such an interesting place with an amazing history that I would like to visit one day. As of the last few years, the levels of pollution in Paris have decreased by a decent amount. I firmly believe that by following their lead we could achieve the same or close to the same results as them. Although ...

Working together to Water the World

This week in our 'SDG's and you' class where we learned about issues without borders and how many of these issues encompassed by the SDGs are issues that have worldwide repercussions and are not limited by borders. We also learned a lot about fair trade and cooperation. We even went to a fairtrade pop-up shop where we saw tons of amazing handmade products that were made by people who were getting paid fair wages under a fair wage co-op. To put this all together we wrote an essay on any SDG of our choice about  how people and organizations are working to address this SDG. I chose SDG 6 because I feel like access to water is so important yet compared to the other SDG's it seems like it's taken as less important. Working together to Water the World       According to the UN between 1970 and 2015 natural wetland shrank by 35% which is 3 times the rate of forest loss, additionally, in 2014, the entire eastern lobe of the South Aral Sea had completely dried up and dis...
